THE RIFLES GOING ACOUSTIC
Recorded in the famed Abbey Road Studios, The Rifles are releasing an acoustic album of their back catalogue with one new release – In Key. Their latest single is naturally more stripped back and intimately written with a real evocation of Oasis’s more acoustic records.
Joel Stoker’s slightly raspy vocal effectively compliments the style of song and while the lyrics are a tad clichéd, they suit the song. Obviously with an acoustic record there are limitations, but at the same time I feel that instrumentally, the track leaves a bit to be desired. The acoustic guitars could really do with some variation – melodically and sonically – while there’s room for the piano to influence more. Another layer such as some harmonica or something along those lines would do a lot for the song.
Overall, In Key has more potential as a whole, as the song itself is quite nice. All the same, hearing some stripped back versions of their classics on this album (out 28th of April) should be a treat. Lets just hope they’re a bit more adventurous for the rest of it!
