Hip-hop has been calling for an inspiring female MC for a while and Twin Cities rapper Lexii Alijai may be the answer. Celebrating her 18th birthday today, Alijai has made some progress in the game as she juggles with school and penning down her own lyrics. Alijai has been active on soundcloud and Youtube dropping tracks, which has helped her catch the attention of songstress Kehlani, who featured Alijai on her song “Jealous”.

Releasing her recent mixtape Joseph’s Coat, Alijai is consistent with her flows, her raw and vulnerable lyrics, and her self-love message. The rap game is not ready for the up and coming Lexii Alijai whose sound has grown and matured over from the few years she has been active. In her song “By my Side”, she raps, “Look, you got my mind, my body and my spirit/ Lot of feelin’s I hide, you probably never hear it”. It received over 200k plays on soundcloud as has accumulated over 14.5k followers.

Alijai has been busy as she recently opened up for Oakland’s Kehlani on January 29, 2016 at Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Lexii Alijai and fellow female performer Dizzy Fare opened up for Kehlani and later, Alijai joined her to preform her verse on Kehlani’s song “Jealous”.

Rappers conventionally attempt to portray a “tough” exterior but with female rapper Alijai, she is not afraid to get personal with her fans. Hard lyrics with a layer of vulnerability, it is impossible to not be drawn in by her story. In her mixtape feel-less, Alijai is not afraid to express her heartbreak in “Grew Apart” and her family strife in “No Cry”.

In a recent interview with City Pages, Aliji admits that J. Cole encouraged her to be more “personal” in her songs, saying, “It picked me up, and I never felt an artist do that for me. That’s why I started getting more personal in my music. It’s just cool to make people feel the same way that J. Cole made me feel.”

Lexii Alijai is creating a stepping-stone for upcoming female MC’s who wish to step into the heavily male-dominated industry. I highly recommend you check her out on soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/lexiialijai
